Writing 101 Day 15: Your Voice will Find You

023

Christmas with the Family

How I remember a number of years ago

When for Christmas I was so determined to go home.

Of my siblings, I lived the furthest away

And had the longest trip to come home for Christmas Day.

As time drew near for me to make the long drive

I kept an eye on the pending weather outside.

With relief I saw the ground and roads looked clear

With no hint of a snowstorm to fear.

Then the phone rang; it was my loving but worried mom

Telling me it was snowing there and to not venture out; to not come.

“But the weather looks fine here and I’m already packed to go.

I will be alright,” I told her, “for here there isn’t any storm or snow.”

Then my brother jumped on the phone

And spoke in a sterner tone,

“Don’t come,” he warned, “for it is snowing like blazes here.”

“Well, I’m still coming,” I retorted, “for it is not snowing here.”

I was so determined to go home

And not spend this Christmas all alone.

I jumped in my car and sped on my way;

I was determined to be with family on Christmas Day.

I traveled the first half of my journey

With no troubles and no worries.

The roads were fine and clear

I felt I had nothing to fear.

But soon, just as I was warned,

I had finally caught up to the storm.

Roads became slick as snow dotted the ground.

Becoming concerned, I carefully slowed down.

With each city and town I traveled to,

The journey was more treacherous as I drove through.

I crossed the state line from Minnesota into Wisconsin;

Now my trek was two-thirds done.

Cautiously I had crossed the Mississippi River

While praying for God to guide me in this wintry weather.

Much to my dismay, the road conditions were worsening

As I slowed even more at each turn and each road crossing.

Finally, I was in the last leg with just one more town to go

And then soon I would be with family and safe at home.

But oh my, oh my, what a blinding surprise

Met my weary and strained eyes.

Now the road was so covered in thick snow

That I no longer could see where to go.

I sighed and teared and desperately prayed

For God to keep guiding me and showing the way.

Boldly, yet cautiously I followed by memory

Keeping track of the familiar landmarks that I could see.

I’d recognize a house, a barn, or a line of trees

And recall where the road used to be.

No one else was traveling on the road

I was on this journey feeling all alone.

Carefully, cautiously I continued on

Not letting my eyes become distracted for long.

I needed to keep my focus on the unseen road

Or else I would be lost and stuck in the mounting snow.

Somehow, God was there steadily leading me

And calming me with his quiet company.

I reached the last town, quiet and still

No one was around as a chilly silence there prevailed.

Sort of a creepy feeling with no one in sight

But I knew everyone was staying warm inside.

Finally, I reached the last road leading to the old farm

And soon pulled into the driveway facing the old red barn.

Most of the family was gathered on the porch

Greeting each other and elated beyond words.

For through the storm we all had come

And now were together and safe at home.

My sister-in-law was first to warmly greet,

“how are you?” as she held the door for me.

“Hooray, she’s here,” my young niece jumped,

“Now we can play ‘Leopard Hunt’.”

We enjoyed a savory celebration feast

And then gathered around the Christmas tree.

The gifts and the tearing wrapping paper are a blur to me

But what I recall the most is the love of family.

Later, my mother sat in her chair all alone

And not forgetting all that God has done.

She knew the story of Jesus’ miraculous birth

To show God’s love to us all on earth.

But now, she replied quietly to me,

“God was here; don’t you think, don’t you see?

He indeed gave us another miracle today

When he brought you home safe for Christmas Day.”

Becky’s Haiku: Hopes and Dreams

Some wants and hopes in

 life simply shatter leaving

My dreams in tatters.

Though not knowing what’s

the matter, God still loves and

restores my future.

And Whatever may

be, I will walk with Jesus

 for eternity

I have just attempted another haiku challenge from Ronovan Writes blog this time using the words “wants” and “tatters”. Also, I felt compelled to write three verses for this one.  If you like poetry and haiku’s then I invite you to also accept his challenge at this link: https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/tag/haiku-challenge/

Writing 101 Day Five: The Unfinished Letter

055

Years ago I sat down and wrote a letter

To my loving and devoted grandmother.

However, I did not take the needed time

To complete and finish every line.

Instead I took a break to run errands,

Return to work, and enjoy the weekend.

I had allowed other things to become more important

Than my grandma who waited for me with gentle patience.

I had started the letter stating that I was well and enjoying the sunshine

And that I hoped she was also doing splendidly fine.

And that was about all that I had written down

As autumn exited and winter entered town.

Then came Christmas and a visit with family

I visited with my grandmother then beside the ornamented tree.

I paid another visit to her as she rested in a nursing home

And held her frail hand that once was so strong and warm.

I returned home and back to my daily life

My letter still unfinished and even out of sight.

My father then called one day with the unwelcome news;

Grandma had passed in the night before morning was due.

Tears stung my eyes as I heaved with a grieving heart

Now emptiness grew in me like an abyss, very deep and dark.

“Do not be so sad,” my caring father tried to say,

“she passed peacefully and she wanted it that way.”

For my grandmother had lived her life in lasting faith in God;

She believed in his love, his guidance, his gentle staff and rod.

And she had completed the special deeds she was given

And the Lord had rewarded her with a new home in heaven.

I remembered the letter that I had never finished;

Now it means nothing; a white page of emptiness.

Now with great regret I couldn’t help but think

about my grandmother waiting for it so patiently.

Then I thought of my grandmother with Jesus at her side

Who knew everything and was so very wise.

Perhaps he lovingly told her about my unfinished letter;

Though I never completed it, I also never stopped loving her.

In this way, I try to remain satisfied and steadfastly content

Knowing that my grandmother is alive and well in the kingdom of heaven.

Writing 101 Day Two: A Room with a View

043

I Would Zoom to Heaven

If I could go anywhere and see anything then

I would zoom to heaven to see my mom again.

She had left too suddenly and too soon;

Unexpectedly, her life on earth came to an end.

I cannot describe the pain and the void

That sometimes dwells inside my heart

All I can say is that I ache so deeply

As in my mind and thoughts, she is never very far.

I know she is well now with no more pain and

No more heartaches or streaming tears

No more illnesses or hardships and

No more thunderstorms or evilness to fear.

What would she being doing if I

Could fly this moment to her side?

I am sure she’d be wandering through

Heaven’s garden and pause with a contented sigh.

Eagerly, she might follow a sandy path

Lined with tall grass and daisies of every hue

To the rim of a lake just to hear the choir

Of the frogs and the chirping crickets, too.

How she loved flowers, the birds, and

Droopy weeping willow trees.

Perhaps she’d relax in a patio chair

Watching, gazing ever so peacefully.

Just like at home, she’d sit just outside

Near a bubbling fountain pond

With the water glistening beneath

The sun’s warm, extending arms.

She’d watch for hummingbirds and

Perhaps an oriole would fly near

Their colorful wings would flutter while

They daintily sipped from the feeders.

Tulips would be in bloom in a

Nearby, carefully planted flowerbed

Some pink, some yellow,

And some vividly red.

Another flowerbed would lay

Across a grassy, shallow hill

Blooming with sunny

Yellow daffodils.

Cedar and oak trees would

Stand flanking the road

Concealing the yard and

Maintaining the quietness of

our century old country home.

Perhaps, a giant pine tree would tower nearby

As if guarding this new peaceful paradise;

This new home in the heavenly blue sky.

Then mom would reach to hug me so tenderly

Saying, “I know you are sad and so alone but

You mustn’t worry so much about me.

For I am well with Jesus always at my side

And here everything is as it was meant to be.”

I would sit a while longer feeling her

Arms gently and lovingly hold me;

Not wanting her to let go but knowing that

I must return where I am meant to be.

For whatever is my work and my purpose

On earth, it is not done; not yet complete.

So reluctantly I would return to finish

The special tasks, God has in mind for me.

Tasks of kindness and caring, and

Of sharing God’s never-ending love.

Tasks also of helping others

So they may have relief and hope.

For God has a purpose for us all

And a perfect, everlasting plan

I must choose to believe and trust him

Even when I don’t understand.

Knowing also that my mom is watching

And Jesus always helps me ever so faithfully

I’ll willingly return and quietly finish the

Special work God has in mind for me.

I know I am writing this a few days late but I still felt a desire to do so. Here is another image compliment of the Stellarium App on my kindle fire. These are two nebulas near each other and are known as the heart and soul nebula. It is amazing how much beauty God has created in our world and in the universe. He is so infinite that there is no end to his wisdom, his creativity, his beauty, and his love. God loves each of us so much that he sent his only son Jesus to die for us on the cross to take away our sins. He wants us, in return to believe in him through his son and to love him with all our beings. And only God’s faithfulness and love lasts forever.  Like the amazing beauty, I sometimes find around me, I am awestruck by God’s amazing and wondrous love. And all’s he wants from me is to love him back wholeheartedly.

Luke 10:27 (Holy Bible New International Version):

…”Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.”

Oops, one day late again but I felt a deep desire to make an entry in my Friday Verse Journal. One of the things that I so enjoy doing is gazing at the night time sky but I must admit with a very cold winter upon us, I don’t feel like standing outside for very long at all. However with the help of the Stellarium app on my kindle fire, I have been able to capture some images with my camera phone without ever leaving my house. The Stellarium app helps me to find and identify planets, a variety of stars, nebulas, and even galaxies. I have had a lot of fun using it. Also while doing so, I am reminded how small and very tiny I am in this humongous universe. I am so thankful to realize that God is so loving and so mindful of me.

Psalms 8:3-4 (Holy Bible New International Version):

“When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them? Human beings that you care for them?”

Friday Verse Journal Matthew 6:21

Although this is one day late, I am determined to write something in my Friday Verse Journal segment. The other day I happened to stop for a quick lunch before returning to work. I sat in my car in the parking debating if I should splurge on a small lunch. I had just decided that I shouldn’t do so when I looked around the parking lot and saw a familiar car. A friend I hadn’t seen in a long time was there. Immediately, I changed my mind and ventured into the restaurant. I ordered a meal and soon found my friend at a small table. We had a wonderful time of chatting, sharing, and encouraging each other. Her friendship and kindness are very special gifts to me and I treasure them very much. I think such special friends are just a few of God’s wonderful gifts which he showers on me. The loving Lord has a way of suddenly surprising me during the day when I sometimes least expect it and that was the case when I unexpectedly met up with my friend. God knew I needed someone to talk to and provided. He truly does supply all my needs and blesses me with wonderful gifts and blessings. I hope that has showered you with a special gift today, something that you will treasure in your heart.

Matthew 6:21 (Holy Bible New International Version):

“For where your treasure is, there  your heart will be also.”

Friday Verse Journal Jeremiah 29:11-13

001

God keeps proving over and over again that he loves me and wants me to keep loving and trusting in him. Today he provided for me when faced with several unexpected situations at work. I needed to change my schedule around making a number of adjustments. My work day started and ended completely different than I had anticipated. I had my mind firmly set on one path but the Lord directed me along a very different route. Instead of being like a straight and direct highway, my days are more like a winding, bending river and I don’t were i will finish the journey before my work is done. It was a long and tiring day but also one full of opportunities in showing love and kindness. I was out all day meeting and helping people when I expected to be in the office working on  admin tasks. When God answers my prayers and displays his love to me, I know he wants me to turn around and show that same compassion to others. In the job I have, I am able to do some of that every day. God is so good!

Jeremiah 29:11-13 (New International Version):

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

Friday Verse Journal Colossians 2:6-7

Through prayer, contemplation, and in my daily faith walk with Jesus, I am continually being revived and renewed by the Spirit. That is when I do take the time to just be with Jesus; to just be still and remember he is God. And then just let his cherished words seep inside of my heart and spirit. I have also been recently reminded through my personal Bible study to not let others judge me. Some judge and draw inaccurate conclusions without taking time to understand and I have see this a lot recently. It is very hurtful but there is no point to try to explain to some because I can tell they are just set on what they believe.

For my part, I am trying my best to do what I believe God is teaching me through my personal study, sermons, daily endurance, and the wisdom of other believers. Along with that I am being challenged to continue on a Thankfulness Journey which I have embarked on even when trouble brews and precious plans go awry.  On the other hand, God has shown me love and gentleness through the love, kindness, and generosity of others. Due to a recent blizzard for instance, a loving family took me into their home providing warm shelter and warm meals when I could not safely travel home. Therefore, God gives me plenty of reasons to remain thankful.

Again, this is two days late, but I am being determined not let another obstacle get in my way of posting a new verse for this week. As I have said, I am making a determined effort to continue with the attitude of thankfulness in my mind, soul and heart.

Colossians 2:6-7 (Holy Bible English Standard Version):

“Therefore, as your received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.”

Once again, my wonderful and delightful cousin, Kathy, has kindly put her encouraging and inspirational thoughts in writing. She has composed a short poem and wanted to share it here on this blog. I hope you find her kind and encouraging words uplifting for you today. Now, once again, here is my cousin Kathy in her own words:

The Dream – A Gift

One night I had a dream that I met God at Heaven’s gate,

“Do you think that you deserve to enter my Kingdom?”

“No, I do not,” I said. “I have done so many wrongs – too many of them – in my life.”

I hung my head, feeling the weight of shame heavy on my heart.

“Remember, my beloved child, I will always love you.

Nothing will keep me from it because I know every hair on your head.

I know the hurts you have felt. When you shed tears, I shed them along with you.

Nobody knows your true heart better than me.”

With that, he threw open the gate and the most beautiful light enveloped me.

I bowed my head once again. “Father, I want to be worthy of your precious gift.”

“My precious child, don’t you see?” God asked.

“You are worthy because I know you and you know me.

Give me your shame and I give to you a beautiful life eternal.”
