ABC Poem: Autumn

Autumn, aromatically sweet

Before the arrival of a blustery winter scene.

Crowning of billowing trees,

Decorated and adorned,

Emerge in vibrant, resin-scented leaves.

Foliage overhead of lemon,

Green, mango-orange, and shades of gold.

Hovering sphere of light

In the deep sea-blue sky

Journeys from dawn to the arrival of dusk;

Kaleidoscope of sunlight brilliance

Luminating the marbled planet while

Marching on in measured time from

New moon to full moon and from

Onset of each new year and new season; its’

Pathway determined in ancient times.

Quivering rays of stretching sunbeams

Reach the autumn forest filled with

Swaying boughs of leaf-laden trees;

Translucent rays brightly display

Unified and blended scene

Vivid in rich hues of harmony

While the cooler wind softly blows.

X-ray vision silently reveals

Yellow, orange, and green veins hidden in minute

Zig-zag stripes in the cluster of autumn leaves

Now gently falling and floating in the

Softly flowing breeze.

Writing 201 Day 8: Flavor, Elegy, and Enumeratio

008

Flavor of Autumns Past

Pungent scent of oak, pine, and maple trees

Penetrating the autumn air.

Remembering also the birches, cedars, and elms

Adding their aromatic flair.

Clasping to the limbs are leaves of deep and changing

Colors; apple red and tangerine orange,

And bright splashes of dark lime and lemon yellow grandeur.

Sweet memories of walking, strolling, and

Wading through clusters, piles, and layers of fallen leaves.

Autumn is harvest time as the last

Of the vegetables and fruits are plucked smelling fresh and sweet.

Pumpkin, squash, and ripened tomatoes

Are reaped from the gardens while the clinging apples

Are pulled from the orchard trees:

Granny Smiths, braeburns, bright red delicious, and

The yellow delicious apples too.

The last of the corn, the wheat, soybeans, and hay

Are reaped without further delay.

Then all enjoy the harvest and a feast on Thanksgiving Day.

Enjoying the warm winds from the south

And the west; a strong and yet gentle, tantalizing breeze

Before the colder north and eastern gales

Rush on in and strip the swaying trees until they’re bare.

For by then autumn is gone and winter

Has rushed in with its snow, layers of ice, and frigid cold

As temperatures drop to zero and below.

Amid the snow and that freezing cold, we take the time

To celebrate Christmas, favorite holiday of old.

Then to restore hope of warmer days to come, a hint of

Spring is in the air as the snow melts

And the ground is bare. Also soon, the snow turns to rain

And the world becomes green again.

Summer then arrives for all those young at heart who like

To camp, hike, swim, and dive.

Such enjoyment of long days, abundant sunshine, and

Celebration of Independence Day.

Like the musical beat of a favorite song or poem which

Entails its own melodious rhyme,

Each season with its own scents and flavors enters in its own

Predictable and expected time. As

After autumn, winter arrives, and then comes spring

Followed by summer and then autumn

Returns again with its own aroma and charming flavor

like an enchanting and familiar friend.

Poetry 201: Gift, Acrostic, and Simile

Gift of the Changing SEASONS

Sunshine warmth, bright flowers, and long days

Evening walks beneath a canopy of an orange sunset glaze.

Afternoon sunlight dwindles and steadily shortens;

Soon brilliant and aromatic autumn marches in

Onward into winter’s snowcapes and then the newness of spring

Never halting, the earth’s vast landscape is forever changing.

Seeing Time like a friend as through life we continue journeying.

Becky’s Haiku: Bridge and Move

052

Between seasons, bridges of change appear

As time moves us through each year.

I have just attempted yet another haiku challenge from Ronovan Writes blog using the words “bridge” and “move”. I am enjoying the challenge of trying to use such seemingly different and even opposite words in such a short poem. These prompts from Ronovan can really be a challenge to the mind.  If you like poetry challenges and haiku’s then I invite you to also accept his latest challenge at this link: https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/2015/08/31/

Becky’s Sonnet: Thankful for Another Beautiful Day

 076

I awoke to find a streaming sunlit sky

While shaking off the remnants of a dream.

The sun was already climbing way up high

In the atmosphere as blue as a shimmering sea.

After yet another storm and some pelting rain,

The grass was turning a deeper shade of green.

Such a wonder this summer has been

As often by now it is slowly browning.

But that just goes to illustrate that I really don’t know

Or understand changing patterns of the weather;

I might perceive seasons of rain and of snow

But cannot foretell the days of this summer.

But all I can do is be content and gladly pray,

“Thank you God, for yet another beautiful day.”

The Changing Seasons of Time

453

Autumn leaves fluttered and fell like colorful snowflakes outside.

“Where had the summer gone,” I wondered and nearly cried.

Now that the leaves were gently littering the ground

I sighed knowing full well that winter must soon come.

I sat down to quietly think and reflectively contemplate

About time continuing on and how seasons of change do not hesitate.

Oh how I remember when I was so young

And winter then was so blissful and fun

The first snow would fall and I’d wake on Christmas morn

To discover gifts of love beneath the tree wrapped in lights and garland

Such memories flood of past holidays and quiet moments with family

When we all celebrated Jesus’ birth on Christmas Eve.

Then the long, colorless winters dragged ever so relentlessly on

Each day more frigid than the last, “Oh, winter, please hurry and be done.”

Fields and forests of falling and mounting snow

Accompanied by the howling wind; biting and bitterly cold

I must admit that a meadow of pristine, drifted snow untouched by man

Is a spectacular sight of frozen waves sculpted by God’s unseen hand

Wondrous too is the scene of glistening snow covering leafless trees

When barely touched by sunlight’s stretching gleam.

Sledding and building snow forts were the rage

For all of us who were still young at age

Finally, relief and hope would appear upon the horizon

As temps would climb and patches of snow began receding

Soon spring would appear, never fear, never fear

The first robin sings perhaps enchanting a family of resting deer

Warm rain showers the land clothing it in vivid lush green and

Sprinkling it with violets and daisies, while dandelions quietly creep in

Spring ushers in the steady warmth of a sultry, hazy summer

Humid days often a prelude to flashes of lightning and resounding thunder

Wide awake I’d lay in bed listening to the raging, drenching storms

Often anxious for my working dad who was yet not safely home.

The cooler summer days were a joy and a heavenly treat

The days were slower allowing for walks and restful peace

Then autumn swings its way into this gentle, settled life

Causing an unwelcomed stir with a wind of urgency and strife

No more warm evenings or long, quiet strolls along the road

Must now prepare for the bitter cold and the heaping snow.

But lo! Before chilling winter unceremoniously bursts through

I will first gladly enjoy autumn’s sweet fragrance and gently fading hues.
