The Changing Seasons of Time

453

Autumn leaves fluttered and fell like colorful snowflakes outside.

“Where had the summer gone,” I wondered and nearly cried.

Now that the leaves were gently littering the ground

I sighed knowing full well that winter must soon come.

I sat down to quietly think and reflectively contemplate

About time continuing on and how seasons of change do not hesitate.

Oh how I remember when I was so young

And winter then was so blissful and fun

The first snow would fall and I’d wake on Christmas morn

To discover gifts of love beneath the tree wrapped in lights and garland

Such memories flood of past holidays and quiet moments with family

When we all celebrated Jesus’ birth on Christmas Eve.

Then the long, colorless winters dragged ever so relentlessly on

Each day more frigid than the last, “Oh, winter, please hurry and be done.”

Fields and forests of falling and mounting snow

Accompanied by the howling wind; biting and bitterly cold

I must admit that a meadow of pristine, drifted snow untouched by man

Is a spectacular sight of frozen waves sculpted by God’s unseen hand

Wondrous too is the scene of glistening snow covering leafless trees

When barely touched by sunlight’s stretching gleam.

Sledding and building snow forts were the rage

For all of us who were still young at age

Finally, relief and hope would appear upon the horizon

As temps would climb and patches of snow began receding

Soon spring would appear, never fear, never fear

The first robin sings perhaps enchanting a family of resting deer

Warm rain showers the land clothing it in vivid lush green and

Sprinkling it with violets and daisies, while dandelions quietly creep in

Spring ushers in the steady warmth of a sultry, hazy summer

Humid days often a prelude to flashes of lightning and resounding thunder

Wide awake I’d lay in bed listening to the raging, drenching storms

Often anxious for my working dad who was yet not safely home.

The cooler summer days were a joy and a heavenly treat

The days were slower allowing for walks and restful peace

Then autumn swings its way into this gentle, settled life

Causing an unwelcomed stir with a wind of urgency and strife

No more warm evenings or long, quiet strolls along the road

Must now prepare for the bitter cold and the heaping snow.

But lo! Before chilling winter unceremoniously bursts through

I will first gladly enjoy autumn’s sweet fragrance and gently fading hues.

Summer Slipping Away

054

Oh no oh my, oh look at how time does fly!

It seems just yesterday, that summer just came

Although a bit cool and some drenching rain

But now oh no! But now look, oh woe!

Summer is quietly slipping with each passing evening

Must enjoy and treasure this time while I still can;

I must soak in the warmth and beaming sunshine.

Before the hot blowing breeze become intensely freezing

And before the stately trees are stripped bare of their fluttering leaves.

Oh yes and before the lush green landscape becomes heavy laden

With snow so blinding, so hurling that there’s no escaping!

But oh, let me slow down and pause for this intervening clause,

Like an old friend, autumn will first come with brilliant shades of red, orange and

Yellow before they fall away turning a dull brown.

Humidity will lessen its grip leaving the atmosphere fresh and

Clear; no longer heavy and thick.

Oh yes, gentle Autumn will wrap itself around me

With its sweet aromas and cool blowing breeze.

But still I need to decide today with no further delay

To enjoy this sizzling summer before it finally slips away.

Writing 101 Assignment 10: Happy Summertime Picnic

017

Okay, for assignment 10, we were instructed to write about a favorite childhood meal and work on developing our unique writing voice. I am not sure that I was successful with developing such a voice.  But I will add that I do attempt to create uniqueness with my blog by maintaining a sense of hopefulness and inspiration with it. My family was wonderful in being hopeful through love, encouragement,  laughter, and through numerous family celebrations. While growing up, I remember special dinners commemorating certain holidays and occasions. Such special events included Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, confirmations, and graduations. But I think I loved summertime picnics the most. Oh how I relished those picnics on the farm. We usually enjoyed picnics during the summer holidays (Memorial Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day) when weather was cooperating. Also we had picnics while camping and just because we felt like it.

We usually were blessed with beautiful weather including clear skies, brilliant sunshine, and perhaps a warm and gentle breeze. The day’s forecast was not a guarantee though as sometimes it became cloudy and colder with the threat of rain upon the horizon. That gentle breeze at times transformed into blowing gusts as we witness our paper plates, cups, and plastic utensils fly in the sudden wind.  It can be quite the challenge to eat a plate of food when a sudden gust travels across the picnic table carrying almost everything away. Oops, there went my cup and napkin.

The preparations for the picnic were enough to make my mouth water as I smelled hot dogs, hamburgers or corn on the cob sizzling on the grill. The corn was fresh from the garden, tasty and sweet enough to melt in my mouth. We had beans and salads for side dishes but my favorite was the watermelon. That too was fresh from the garden and my mom sliced in it in thick wedges. We kids ate it with such gusto that our faces and hands were covered with the sticky, oozing juice. No wonder she insisted we ate it outside. Another special treat was fresh strawberries also grown on the farm.

And it wasn’t just the food that made the picnic special; it was the relaxed and fun visiting with family which was often punctuated with friendly teasing, humorous comments and laughter. And there was just something special about spending many summer days outside and just being with family. Almost every year, I never wanted summer to end. Oh how I loved those summertime picnics.

Writing 101 Assignment 7: The Battle Between Summer and Winter

“I like summer!”

“Well, I like winter!”

“What’s so great about winter?”

“What’s so great about summer?”

“During the summer, the temperature is warm

And I can stay outside all day long.”

“Winter is an adventure when that mighty wind blows

And I bravely trample through drifts of snow.”

“But that northern breeze is just too much for me!

Soon I have a cold as I start to sneeze and sneeze.”

“You know, summer is no picnic either

With the pollen, the weeds, and flowers in bloom, I soon have hay fever.”

“Winter is so white and bleak with no vivid colors to see.

But summer is a vibrant rainbow of red, orange, purple, yellow, and green.”

“Summer is sometimes too drab with brown grass and dry dust floating in the air.

Winter ushers in the purest breezes which filter and clean the atmosphere.”

“Winter lasts too long, those months and months of snow seem to go on forever.”

”Summer drags on too when heat and humidity rise I just perspire and swelter.”

“In the summer, birds gladly sing while grazing, strolling wildlife can be seen.”

“Winter has its own wonder and surprises like seeing a brilliant sundog in the sky.”

“You know this battle between summer and winter can go on forever:

I know, let’s just talk about the weather.”

“That is fine with me but what about autumn and spring?”

“Well, I like autumn.”

“and I like spring!”

“Oh, no, here we go again.”

Edge of the Forest

014

Slender birches and elms tower in the blue lit sky

Quietly displaying their dainty green leaves

As their long armed branches silently

Wave In the gently blowing breeze.

A lone songbird chirps and sings deep

In the quietly sprawling woods

A sad and lonely melody which perhaps

No neighboring creature understood.

Like a dampened sponge, the lush grass green

Grass sinks beneath my bare, sunbathed feet.

As the sun’s warm and transparent rays

Wrap my arms while tinting my face and cheeks.

The  soft aroma of sun warmed pines, wildflowers and

other woodsy scents drift with the quiet breeze.

Such a tranquil and peaceful, summery day

Just sitting by this swaying forest of trees.
