Becky’s Song: Being Thankful in January

IMG_20151226_125714282_HDR

(Tune: Deck the Halls):

January is too cold fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

And I can tell I’m getting old fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Oh this weather and the temperatures, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

I cannot so easily endeavor, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Tis the season to hibernate, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Stay inside until Spring’s first day, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Oh but then I might miss some fun, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

And not see the bright rainbow sun, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Also no sledding or skiing, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Nor walking beneath snow glistened trees, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Nor making angels in the snow, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

All because outside I won’t go, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

So, I guess I’ll venture outside, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Now that the bright sun did arise, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

And continue on life’s journey, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

And try to see this new day’s blessings, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

It is still the time to be thankful, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Knowing that God is faithful, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

He has promised to never leave me, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

And lovingly he’s always providing, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

So now as I step into the cold, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Following a snow swept road, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

I will remember that Jesus is with me, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Sheltering me in his love and peace, fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la

Kathy’s Haiku: Year and New

021

Have a bright year new

That is improved from the last

Tears will just not do.

My talented cousin, Kathy, also just attempted another haiku challenge from Ronovan Writes blog using the words “year” and “new”. These prompts from Ronovan can really be a fun challenge.  If you like writing poetry challenges and haiku’s then I invite you to also accept his latest challenge at this link: https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/2015/11/30/ronovanwrites-weekly-haiku-poetry-prompt-challenge-77-yearnew.

Starting this year with

Sky soft blue; walking a new

Path God planned for you.

Becky’s Freku: A Wintry Scene

IMG_20151226_125714282_HDR

A winter snowscape awaited me

As one day I gazed out to see

The slender trees mostly bare of their leafy crowns

Motionless as statues in the morning dawn.

Pale sky and ground white with snow

Greeted me outside my window.

A damp chill hung in the wintry air

While inside the temps remained warm and fair.

Such as still and quiet scene

Covered by a soft blanket of gentle peace.

It is the Lord’s loving and nurturing way

Silently reminding that everything will be okay.

Chilled wintry day touched

By God’s peace and grace; I then

Know all is okay.

The Christmas Tree

IMG_20151226_125850093

Although late, I still want to share a new Christmas poem. I hope everyone who is reading this has had a wonderful and blessed Christmas:

Carefully placed and standing where all can see

Heralding angel poised above the pine needle green.

Rows of colorful lights brighten the scene

Infused and trimmed by love unseen.

Stars, snowflakes, and bulbs adorn the limbs

Trustfully reminding us of him and the

Manger scene where he was born;

Arriving long ago on Christmas morn.

Shepherds heard and flocked to see the sight;

Taught by angels who appeared in a great light.

Remembering and honoring many years later

Eventual arrival of the Lord Jesus, our Savior;

Everlasting King who will rule forever and ever.

Becky’s Freku: Like a River

I have recently learned about a new poem style known as a freku. It begins with a free verse poem and then concludes with a summarizing haiku; hence the term freku. This is my second try with such a poem.

038

Like a river that gently comes and goes,

The day opens and flows before me.

Like a river that turns and bends, it unfolds

With unknown events; hidden and unseen.

And like a river softly forever lapping in a

Continuous tinkling stream,

I must trustingly wade through this new day

By walking with the Lord in faith and

Letting him lead me the way.

Like a river that

Flows, must keep on trusting and

Faithfully follow.

Becky’s Haiku: Charm and Look

023

Little snowfall is

A charm; a blinding blizzard

Then I’ll look alarmed.

Descending Darkness

Today, I learned about a new type of poem called a Freku.  This style of poetry includes a free verse poem which is then summarized at the end with a haiku. This is my first try at such a poem. Hope you enjoy reading it.

018

Darkness descends once again

Signaling the beginning

Of a long wintry night

Where the sun has dipped below

The distant and shrouded horizon

Slipping silently out of sight.

Oh that frigid winter is still coming

As its annual arrival is a calculated certainty

When the temps keep steadily falling

To zero degrees and below; so I think, “Woe is me.”

For blessed warmth I then dive

Beneath my layered bedding

Trying to stay warm and alive

When I begin to feel the drafting

Breeze seeping its way in.

So underneath my cavern of blankets

I then rest, think, and pray

As I quietly wonder and

Silently contemplate.

The darkness surrounds me

Like a thick shroud;

It wraps and securely

Hold me in its gripping mouth.

No flicker of light

Can I perceive

In this deep darkness

Which keeps hold of me.

I strain to vainly hear

With my dull ear, a slight

Sound; a hint of a whisper.

But no such tone reaches me;

I resolve to remain content in quiet peace

Knowing full well that the darkness will fade

Revealing a new and sun bright day.

For now though, I will settle in

Closing my eyes in a gentle sleep;

Safely tucked in for the night and

Hoping to have a sweet and pleasant dream.

As the deep darkness

Descends, I rest and hope to

Have a pleasant dream.

Becky’s Haiku2: Cake and Wolf

008

Like a mad wolf, I

Ravenously devoured

 my cake in one gulp.

I have just tried a second attempt at the haiku challenge from Ronovan Writes blog using the words “cake” and “wolf”. I am enjoying the challenge of trying to use such seemingly different and even opposite words in such a short poem.  If you like poetry challenges and haiku’s then I invite you to also accept his latest challenge at this link: https://ronovanwrites.wordpress.com/2015/11/30/ronovanwrites-weekly-haiku-poetry-prompt-challenge-74-cakewolf/

Drenched and caked in mud,

The lone wolf silently crept

Through the rain and woods.
