Another Gloomy Day?

IMG_20160131_150959271

Clouds were thick and gray;

Dreary morn to my disdain.

Even so, God told,

“Do not be dismayed.”

Quietly I sat to pray

For his help to cope

On this darkened day.

He then brightened my pathway

With his Light of Hope.

Isaiah 41:10 (Holy Bible New International Version):

“Do not fear for I am with you; do not be dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help me: I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Descending Darkness

Today, I learned about a new type of poem called a Freku.  This style of poetry includes a free verse poem which is then summarized at the end with a haiku. This is my first try at such a poem. Hope you enjoy reading it.

Darkness descends once again

Signaling the beginning

Of a long wintry night

Where the sun has dipped below

The distant and shrouded horizon

Slipping silently out of sight.

Oh that frigid winter is still coming

As its annual arrival is a calculated certainty

When the temps keep steadily falling

To zero degrees and below; so I think, “Woe is me.”

For blessed warmth I then dive

Beneath my layered bedding

Trying to stay warm and alive

When I begin to feel the drafting

Breeze seeping its way in.

So underneath my cavern of blankets

I then rest, think, and pray

As I quietly wonder and

Silently contemplate.

The darkness surrounds me

Like a thick shroud;

It wraps and securely

Hold me in its gripping mouth.

No flicker of light

Can I perceive

In this deep darkness

Which keeps hold of me.

I strain to vainly hear

With my dull ear, a slight

Sound; a hint of a whisper.

But no such tone reaches me;

I resolve to remain content in quiet peace

Knowing full well that the darkness will fade

Revealing a new and sun bright day.

For now though, I will settle in

Closing my eyes in a gentle sleep;

Safely tucked in for the night and

Hoping to have a sweet and pleasant dream.

As the deep darkness

Descends, I rest and hope to

Have a pleasant dream.

You are the Everlasting Lord

695

You are the everlasting Lord;

You make the sun rise

And hover in the vaulted blue sky.

You are the everlasting Lord;

You paint the glowing pink sunset

And let me know it is time to rest.

You are the Everlasting Lord:

You brighten each day with your light

Showing me which path to take; which way is right.

You are the everlasting Lord;

You are Creator of the heavens and earth

And each spring you create new life and give us rebirth.

You are the everlasting Lord;

You created the flowers and the trees

And pave the path for my daily journey.

You are the everlasting Lord;

You continue to watch from the heavens above

And live in my heart and instill me with your love.

You are the everlasting Lord:

You generously provide all that I need

As I trek through this world to my final destiny.

You are the everlasting Lord:

You watch over me as I sleep at night;

You stay by my side in case I awake in tears or fright.

You are the everlasting Lord;

You give us a heavenly view and new hope

Through the lens of your word; your own telescope.

You are the everlasting Lord:

You save and forgive me for all that I have done wrong

And wait to welcome me in heaven with praise and song.

You are the everlasting Lord;

Reigning forever and ever,

You are Lord.

Be Still

456

Be still and be enveloped by his peace.

Be still in prayer; for his love and forgiveness you’ll receive.

Be still as the morning light filters in;

Be still and let this day gently begin.

Be still in the lull and quiet moments of the day

For they are raindrops of blessings along the way.

Be still when the western sun rests on the horizon;

Be still to absorb his glowing love and affection.

Be still as you lay awake in the depths of night.

Be still and know he is Lord and everything will be made right.

Just be still.

Jesus in the Rainbow

Trailing Rainbow

Red: Jesus’ blood was shed on the cross so my sins may be washed away in forgiveness.

Orange: Like the brilliant glowing sunset, Jesus’ light is brightly shining within us.

Yellow: As the day dawns with morning sunlight, Jesus’ presence stays with me as my guide in life.

Green:  He’s the Good Shepherd keeping us in his scope; He watches and gives us eternal hope.

Blue: Like the clear sky that stretches with no end, so it is with heaven, God’s everlasting kingdom.

Purple: Jesus arose from his grave victoriously and will reign forever in glorious majesty.

Writing 101 Day 17: Fear

004

The Things I Fear

I am afraid of many things; indeed I have many fears.

Sometimes I fear what I can’t see or the sounds that I do hear.

I fear loud percussion thunderstorms rippling through the sky;

I also fear zigzag flashes of lightening searing through the night.

I fear snakes, lizards and all sorts of crawling and slithering reptiles

As well as spiders, ants and beetles creeping across the floor tile.

I can expel a harrowing scream if a bat flies in flapping its wings;

they swish like soft blades in the night

and I still hear him even when out of sight.

I also screamed, frightening my mother terribly

when stung by a buzzing, angry bumble bee.

I fear traveling in the winter in the freezing rain, drizzle or snow;

I also fear the screeching, howling wind as the harder it blows.

Sometimes I fear strange scratching noises and thumps in the night

For once in the darkness, a loud scraping branch gave me such a fright.

I fear large animals living and hiding in the woods and the land;

I take care to travel, walk and hike in safety as much as I can.

I fear unexpected accidents as I journey and wander along the way.

For once I was painfully injured when trapped in deep mud one fine day.

The muddy plain had behaved like sinking quicksand holding me fast

And taking all of my strength and might to pull free at long last.

I fear other people and the unkind comments they sometimes make

Trying their best to be hurtful and make sure I feel alone, not wanted, and unsafe.

Or they like to point out all of my flaws in life; for not one comment is enough

But must make certain that I know I am unworthy, and fully inadequate.

For then i may choose to hide myself and my feelings in a little room

where I feel safe from the world in my private and tiny cocoon.

Often I fear tomorrow; not knowing what it may bring.

I fear the mysterious future; being so unclear, so uncertain.

I fear trekking on this obscure and bumpy pathway through this road of life

Where darkness tries to overwhelm me and so I strain to see the light.

But no matter what I fear today in this life in its many uncertainties,

I know Jesus is in my heart and my future with him is hope and eternity.

Once again, my wonderful and delightful cousin, Kathy, has kindly put her encouraging and inspirational thoughts in writing. She has composed a short poem and wanted to share it here on this blog. I hope you find her kind and encouraging words uplifting for you today. Now, once again, here is my cousin Kathy in her own words:

The Dream – A Gift

One night I had a dream that I met God at Heaven’s gate,

 “Do you think that you deserve to enter my Kingdom?”

“No, I do not,” I said. “I have done so many wrongs – too many of them – in my life.”

I hung my head, feeling the weight of shame heavy on my heart.

“Remember, my beloved child, I will always love you.

Nothing will keep me from it because I know every hair on your head.

I know the hurts you have felt. When you shed tears, I shed them along with you.

Nobody knows your true heart better than me.”

With that, he threw open the gate and the most beautiful light enveloped me.

I bowed my head once again. “Father, I want to be worthy of your precious gift.”

“My precious child, don’t you see?” God asked.

“You are worthy because I know you and you know me.

Give me your shame and I give to you a beautiful life eternal.”

Living by leading the way

Into Jesus’ tender loving care

Graciously teaching God’s plan of forgiveness through his

Holy, living,  and truthful word

Tenderly showing the only path to everlasting life

How often I think “today is too hard” or “today is too long.” For me, Thursdays are very long. Just yesterday, I was helping a gentleman with some grocery shopping. He was the last person on my schedule and it had already been a long day of helping people with meals, exercising, household tasks, checking medications, and completing special errands. We went shopping as planned. His list of needed items was not that long but he really likes to take his time spending five to ten minutes choosing each item. Today, he seemed to take longer than usual.  I am very tired from the long day  I already had endured and now was growing frustrated that it was about to become much longer than I originally thought.

I try to politely encourage him to make his selections a little faster but that didn’t work. Then I tried setting a time limit saying that we needed to be checking out of the store by a certain time. He moved along a little faster but not by much. He enjoys looking around the store and does not want to be rushed. The more I tried to hurry him along, the more he deliberately slowed down! So, although I am very tired and very anxious to be done for the day, I slow down too letting him take as much time as he wanted.  As we went along, I’d quietly pray asking God to give me his gentleness, calmness and patience I needed to finish this day. We finally made it home where i help him prepare supper and he completes a few more tasks for the day.  And I thought, “this day was too long!” But really, it wasn’t.

Because God was with me the entire time helping me as I helped others all day long. Sometimes I look at the day and think, “This is too much!” But when I just concentrate on a small part of the day and so break the day into small steps then it becomes more doable. And often that is what God wants me to do. Just look along my daily , windy, path one corner at a time and my journey will end in God’s planned time. And in God’s good time, I am able to rest before facing another day, another journey with Jesus leading the way.  In this manner, God makes my yoke lighter as I learn from him and let him lead me. As I contemplated on this, the words of Jesus in Matthew 11 came to me:

Matthew 11:28-30 (Holy Bible English Standard Version):

“Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me for I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Morning Light

092903_1617[00]

As the new bright day is dawning and the first rays of sunlight filter in,

the Lord lovingly and gently awakens me.

My eyes slowly open and as watchful consciousness alerts my thoughts and soul,

I turn to look out the glass pane to to quietly and even wistfully see.

The leafy trees are a pale shade of green and the sky a gentle hue of blue.

Everything glistens beneath the sun’s transparent rays and the morning dew.

Now my soul is filled with earnest contentment of the simple and gentle beginning

so I arise with my thoughts on the Lord and with quiet anticipation.

In a gentle voiced prayer, i answer, “Thank you, Lord for showering me

with your sunshine and your sweet love today and

thank you Lord for your faithfulness in staying with me through this

gentle, sunlit day.
